Substrate – Understanding Galuku Coir & Cocopeat
Coco Coir and Cocopeat
‘Coir’ describes the fibrous matter of the coconut husk surrounding the hard inner shell of the coconut which contains the coconut flesh and milk.
The longer fibrous material has been used for centuries to make ropes favoured by mariners in Asia and the Middle East as well as doormats, brushes and mattresses. What is less known is that amongst those longer fibres are highly absorbent and porous minuscule particles made up of minute tubes which trap and retain liquid. It is this material which previously was a waste product that we call cocopeat (coco dust or coco pith). In contrast to other growing mediums cocopeat is truly a renewable resource.
Galuku Coir and Cocopeat – products
Galuku can provide cocopeat based substrates suitable for hydroponic farming, above ground plantations or architectural purposes such as rooftop gardens. The success of the cocopeat formulation is the ability to perform consistently year on year with minimal decomposition or reduction in air-filled porosity. Crop health and productivity is achievable for 5 years and beyond. Quality cocopeat substrates will provide long term water-holding capacity, and air-filled porosity ensuring optimal growth through all stages of the crop.
Cocopeat for farming soft fruits
Galuku in collaboration with farmers has developed cocopeat substrates which provide optimal rootzone conditions to grow soft fruits such as raspberries, strawberries, blackberries and blueberries. The cocopeat substrates provide increased yields and reduce loss from pests and disease.
Cocopeat for hydroponic crops
Galuku cocopeat products are used globally for the hydroponic and open bag growing of crops such as cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, ginger and medicinal marijuana. Galuku works with growers to ensure the substrate is optimal for the intended crop, site and growing conditions.
